Management 3.0 #Workout One-Day Workshop with Jurgen Appelo
Description

What is #Workout?
"When an organization’s culture is bad, don’t just blame the managers. Management of an organization is everyone’s responsibility. Better management means engaging people, improving the whole system, and increasing value for clients. For most people, however, these principles are not enough. They need concrete practices, or, in other words, regular workout exercises.
workout-book-coverThat’s how management guru Jurgen Appelo kicks off his third book, #Workout: Games, Tools and Practices to Engage people, Improve Work, and Delight Clients. Jurgen wrote this book in 2014 to meet the demand for a modern management guide to transforming leadership and team collaboration through creativity, productivity and employee engagement. It’s a full-color, 500-page, no-bull proactive guide with exercises you can immediately apply with your team today.
Since its release, #Workout has taken the management world by storm with a series of one-day #Workout workshops, just as fun, just as colorful, just as hands-on and just as proactive as the book version. But, even better than the book, you get to workshop with and learn from fellow managers and team leaders just like yourself!

What happens at a #Workout Workshop?
A #Workout workshop has you working out answers to shared questions with other people looking to improve their approach to management. These common questions include:
- How can we motivate our workers?
- How can we change the organization’s culture?
- How can we change the mindset of managers?
- How can we get teams to take responsibility?
- How can we improve teamwork and team collaboration?
- How can we can managers to trust their teams?
- How can we develop people’s competencies?
- How can we be agile when the organization is not?
While each workshop is tailored to attendees’ needs, like these questions, there are certain challenges that all managers, team leaders, project managers and C-level execs face. Each workshop includes hands-on approaches to these topics:
- employee engagement (Personal Maps)
- performance management (Metrics Ecosystem and OKRs)
- team collaboration and experimentation (Celebration Grids)
- rewards and recognition (Kudo Box)
- story-telling and improvement dialogues (Improvement Dialogues)
- extrinsic motivation vs. intrinsic motivation
- building trust
- personal coaching (Feedback Wraps)
- delegation (Delegation Boards)
- compensation plans (Salary Formula and Merit Money)
- …and how to customize it all for your team’s specific needs!
We actively apply the #Workshop practices found in the book to the workshop itself. You can certainly expect to use the Feedback Wrap, Delegation Boards, Personal Maps, and other ideas before, during, and after the workshop. Some workshops even apply Merit Money to distribute ten percent of the workshop’s profits among the participants!
Attendees

Who should attend a #Workout Workshop?
We call this book and management coaching style a #Workout because it’s just that, something that you have to keep adapting to your needs every day (or else you’ll just sit on the sofa and nothing will get better.) For example, imagine you love swimming but travel around a lot for work. Without a portable swimming pool, you need to adapt your exercise routine for the tools you have – in this case, your trainers – so you run. Management 3.0 is all about offering you actionable ways to increase employee engagement and team collaboration by finding the right routine for your team.
This also means that each Workshop is different, adapting to the different attendees’ sectors and needs. Most workshops include a diverse mix of teammates and team leaders, project managers, knowledge workers, middle management and top-level execs, agile developers and scrum masters, human resources and start-up heads. At Management 3.0, we believe that management is too important just to be left to the managers, so anyone looking to improve management in their organization is a welcome addition to any workshop discussion.
Prerequisites
Do I need to attend the two-day Management 3.0 Workshop first?
It’s recommended but not necessary to attend a two-day Management 3.0 Workshop first. Both sets of workshops discuss similar topics — the definition of leadership and how it can fit into the future of management — but approach it in different ways with completely different material. The two-day workshop helps take agile management practices beyond software development to mainstream management, and #Workout takes it further by allowing you and fellow managers to play games and apply best practices together that you can then take back to your office.

Jurgen Appelo
urgen Appelo offers concrete games, tools, and practices so you can introduce better management, with fewer managers.
Jurgen calls himself a creative networker. But sometimes he's a writer, speaker, trainer, entrepreneur, illustrator, manager, blogger, reader, dreamer, leader, freethinker, or… Dutch guy.
Since 2008 Jurgen writes a popular blog at www.noop.nl, covering the creative economy, agile management, and personal development. He is the author of the book Management 3.0, which describes the role of the manager in agile organizations. And he wrote the little book How to Change the World, which describes a supermodel for change management.
Jurgen is CEO of the business network Happy Melly, and co-founder of the Agile Lean Europe network and the Stoos Network. He is also a speaker who is regularly invited to talk at business seminars and conferences around the world.
After studying Software Engineering at the Delft University of Technology, and earning his Master’s degree in 1994, Jurgen Appelo has busied himself starting up and leading a variety of Dutch businesses, always in the position of team leader, manager, or executive. Jurgen has experience in leading a horde of 100 software developers, development managers, project managers, business consultants, service managers, and kangaroos, some of which he hired accidentally.
Nowadays he works full-time managing the Happy Melly ecosystem, developing innovative courseware, books, and other types of original content. But sometimes Jurgen puts it all aside to spend time on his ever-growing collection of science fiction and fantasy literature, which he stacks in a self-designed book case. It is 4 meters high.
